Standard issue fragmentation devices, Frag Grenades are lobbed at the foe to soften them up before an attack with other weapons. Purchasing Frag Grenades in RS gives you 4 to throw. There is no way as of yet to alter the strength of your throw by holding down the mouse longer; however, by running forward at the time of release, the grenades appear to fly a bit farther. They can be pretty bouncy, at times, so watch out for your allies!

The Bolt Pistol fires a large-caliber self-propelled explosive “bolt”, doing noteworthy damage to the enemy and piercing their armor (to a degree). It has a 20-round clip, a moderate rate of fire, and decent accuracy and power. The bolt pistol is often useful as a secondary weapon for Devastators and Havocs, who have an annoying tendency to spend all their heavy weapon ammo killing the enemy.

A larger version of the Bolt Pistol, the Bolter holds 30 bolts and is a powerful component of a Marine’s arsenal. It is a well-rounded weapon, with a decent rate of fire, and decent power and accuracy. There are two fire modes: mode 0 is semi-automatic, and mode 1 allows the firing of 6 round bursts. While bursts have a higher rate of fire within the burst, there is a long recharge time between bursts. For this reason, I would recommend using semi-auto fire most of the time.

The largest member of the Boltgun family, the Heavy Bolter serves both Imperial and Chaos armies as a powerful machinegun. It is a heavy weapon, and needs to be deployed before firing. It is deadly to those races and classes with light armor, such as many Eldar and Orks, and is also quite effective against vehicles. It has a 100 round clip, as well as a spare.

The Lascannon, or Laser Cannon, fires an intense beam of light at one’s foes, piercing the thickest infantry and vehicle armor with ease. It is a heavy weapon, and needs to be deployed before firing. It has 5 one shot energy packs, and must be reloaded between each shot. It has two modes of fire: mode 0 is a standard fire mode, and mode 1 is a zoomed in fire mode. Be careful, however, as the zoomed mode appears to limit the range of your shot. Lascannons are very handy for blasting a powerful foe (an HQ, Terminator, or Dreadnought), and then running away behind cover to reload.

The standard armament of Imperial and Chaos Terminators (in tabletop, Chaos Terminators use a slightly-different gun, but for the purposes of Rival Species they are the same), this is a deadly weapon option. The primary fire button fires the Storm Bolter, a powerful weapon consisting of two Bolters modified to fire in unison. This has decent power and accuracy, and a good rate of fire. The secondary fire button swings the Power Fist, a slow but deadly powered gauntlet, crackling with energy.

The Assault Cannon is one of the deadliest weapons in the game, spewing out how lead at an insane rate. It has a 200 round ammo capacity, but it goes through this supply very quickly if you are not careful. The primary fire button fires the Assault Cannon; The secondary fire button swings the Power Fist, a slow but deadly powered gauntlet, crackling with energy.

A self-contained flamethrower, the Flamer sprays a volatile chemical compound that ignites upon contact with the air. The range of the spray is somewhat limited, but anything caught within the blast will take serious damage. Additionally, Flamers have a large ammo supply, and are unlikely to run out of fuel in the average match. Also important to note is the fact that Flamers are extremely powerful versus vehicles: enough flames applied to a Dread or Wraithlord will make it go boom.

The Missile Launcher is tubular device that fires self-propelled, unguided rockets at one’s foes. The rockets deal impressive damage in a wide radius (often catching one’s teammates, if the shooter is not careful). Like the other heavy weapons, it is effective against vehicles, but must be deployed before firing. It holds 10 Missiles in one clip. Because of the [relatively] slow speed of flying missiles, it is often a better idea to aim at the ground near an enemy, or a nearby wall; likewise, it is often advisable to lead your target, aiming where you think they will be in a moment… if you can score a direct hit (instead of merely a blast) on an enemy, though, the damage is truly prodigious. Finally, for blast weapons like the Missile Launcher (and Plasma Weapons), firing downward from a high vantage point is often helpful.

There is no crosshair for aiming the plasma; however, it creates a blast upon impact, thereby reducing the need to aim precisely. The Plasma Pistol holds enough energy for 30 shots.

This “combo” is a Bolt Pistol (as above) paired with a Chainsword, a deadly close combat weapon utilizing a whirring “chain” of monomolecular blades. The primary fire button swings the Chainsword, which is fast and deadly in melee; secondary fire shoots the Bolt Pistol, which is identical to the individual Bolt Pistol… HOWEVER, the concentration required to wield two weapons together means that the Bolt Pistol suffers from not having a crosshair. All in all, however, this is a powerful combination, and the lack of a crosshair is certainly negated by this option’s melee utility.
